We have to get comfortable in our own skin, comfortable in our own minds otherwise we are controlled by the wild horse that is our thinking, sensing body. It's an uncomfortable truth but when we understand this quote it can serve as a huge driver of change.
We believe that our happiness is dependant on conditions being met. When we meet the love of our life, when lose the weight, or when we land the dream job we think we will feel better. When we move to the bigger houser or upgrade the car, our life will be perfect and we will be fulfilled.
But how often have you noticed that you set a goal, you get there and for a moment you might feel pretty good about it all. But within a week or two you go back to base line. Stress and worry gnaw at the edges your happiness. Negative thinking lurks in the background constantly criticising you and berating you for not being enough. So you're left constantly looking for the next thing to fill the hole and make everything right.
Our yoga practice is about understanding that we as humans are at our core, are always running towards that which brings us pleasure and trying to avoid that which will bring us pain or suffering. We begin to see though that suffering is inevitable in any life. It can't be avoided. We also see that pleasure is fleeting and will inevitably fade.
Through yoga and meditation we can start to study the patterns in our thinking and realise how our ego is constantly setting traps for us to get stuck in. Comparison, overthinking, judgement, shaming, delusion.
In yoga we learn that we can connect to a deeper part of ourselves that is already perfectly whole and complete without us having to do anything. We learn to tune into this place of peace, to operate from this place and to use it as a refuge to help us weather the storms that life will inevitably throw at us.
